About island of Rab
The name "Rab" was first mentioned in 1446, in a document concerning the establishment of the Franciscan monastery of St. Euphemia in the village of Kampor. The root of the name comes from the Illyrian "Arb" (dark, green, forested), and was later transposed into the ancient names "Arba", "Arva", and "Arbia", which were mentioned by the geographers of the time. For lovers of history and cultural heritage, the island of Rab is a true delight. As you stroll through the old town streets, alongside many buildings constructed in the Romanesque style, you can admire numerous Gothic portals, Baroque altars, and Renaissance windows with ornamental decorations. Although unique in many ways, the island of Rab is especially proud of its four bell towers, for which it is widely renowned. For this reason, it is often colloquially referred to as the "Town of Four Bell Towers". The bell tower of the basilica dominates the town and is considered one of the finest examples of late Romanesque architecture in our region. Scattered across different parts of the island are the remaining seven idyllic villages: Barbat, Banjol, Palit, Kampor, Mundanije, Supetarska Draga, and Lopar. Around 9,000 people live on the island, making their livelihoods mainly through agriculture, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism. Our tradition of organized tourism now spans more than 112 years. The island's vegetation is lush, and in addition to the native holm oak, Rab is covered with evergreen forests. The hilly ridge of Kamenjak protects the island from cold winds, resulting in a very pleasant Mediterranean climate, with more than 2,600 hours of sunshine each year.
